[July 03, 2021]   Two Heartland Community College students placed in national competition during the Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference.

More than 12,000 participants from across the country convened online for the Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) 2021 National Leadership Conference (NLC). The event connected collegiate-level students through competitive events, leadership sessions, and networking.

Sheyann Mathias Williams of Pontiac, IL competed in the Community Service bracket and brought home a fifth place title. For competition, Sheyann created a documentary titled Breaking the Barriers of the Pandemic: The Hidden Wisdom of Experience, which followed Heartland students as they interviewed residents at Windmill Manor in Batavia, IL to gain insight on their professions, experience, and advice to the next generation on entering the workforce.

Roxanne Reed of Bloomington, IL competed in Client Services and finished in 4th place. During competition, Roxanne was given a case study and delivered a role-play depicting how a customer service representative would best resolve the outlined scenario.

The Leadership Conference featured 60 events at the collegiate level, which were adapted to accommodate the online setting but still optimize competitors’ experience. And, FBLA-PBL forged partnerships with industry leaders to underwrite competitive events and scholarships for students achieving national ranking.

At PBL conferences, students compete and attend workshops as well as listen to keynote addresses. Through this event and competition, students apply and showcase the knowledge and skills they’ve developed in the classroom.
