Four killed in Wednesday night crash on Interstate 55

The Following Preliminary Information is Being Released by Illinois State Police District 9

WHAT: Two Vehicle Fatal Traffic Crash

WHERE: Interstate 55 at milepost 122, Logan County

WHEN: July 7, 2021 at approximately 10:11 p.m.

VEHICLES:

Unit 1 – 2016 Gray Chrysler Pacifica

Unit 2 – 2017 White Freightliner Truck-Tractor Semi-Trailer

DRIVERS:

Unit 1 – 47-year-old male from Washington, IL – Deceased

Unit 2 – Dwayne T. Santiago, 50-year-old male from Stone Mountain, GA

PASSENGER:

Unit 1 – Juvenile 13-year-old female from Washington, IL – Transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries

Unit 1 – Juvenile, 16-year-old female from Washington, IL – Deceased

Unit 1 – Juvenile, 17-year-old female from Washington, IL – Deceased

Unit 1 – Juvenile, 17-year-old male from Washington, IL – Deceased

Unit 2 – Cory M. Jackson, 41-year-old male from Decatur, GA – Transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries

PRELIMINARY: A preliminary investigation indicates the following occurred: Unit 1 was traveling northbound on Interstate 55 near milepost 122 when the driver of Unit 1 lost control of the vehicle in heavy rain. Unit 1 skidded across the median and into on-coming southbound traffic. Unit 2 was traveling southbound at the same location and struck Unit 1 in the southbound lanes. Unit 1 came to a rest in the median and Unit 2 crossed the median crossed and the northbound lanes before overturning on the frontage road east of Interstate 55. Four occupants of Unit 1 were pronounced deceased on scene.
