Adam Engel's 10th-inning homer lifts White Sox to sweep of O's

[July 12, 2021]  Adam Engel hit a three-run home run with two outs in the top of the 10th inning that gave the visiting Chicago White Sox a 7-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles Sunday afternoon.

Chicago put two on with two outs against Tyler Wells (2-1) in the 10th before Engel crushed his homer to left -- the team's third homer of the day -- for a 7-4 lead. Andrew Vaughn added a solo homer in the fourth and a three-run shot in the sixth.

The White Sox went 7-0 versus Baltimore this season. They scored 27 runs in this weekend's three-game series.

Baltimore got two hits to start the game but no more until there were two outs in the ninth when Ryan McKenna singled. Pinch-hitter Trey Mancini then lined a two-run homer to right off closer Liam Hendriks (4-2) that tied the game at 4.

Matt Foster came on to get the last two outs in the bottom of the 10th and earned his first major league save.

Chicago starter Dylan Cease allowed two runs on two hits in five innings. Spenser Watkins started for Baltimore and gave up one run on four hits in 4 1/3 innings in his second major league start.

Baltimore took an early lead thanks to All-Star Cedric Mullins and Austin Hays. Mullins led off the first with a bunt single, and Hays followed with a two-run homer to right for a quick 2-0 advantage.

Vaughn sliced the lead in half with a solo homer to left-center off Watkins in the fourth. Then, Vaughn struck again in the sixth against Cole Sulser, belting a three-run homer to right-center that put Chicago on top, 4-2.

Hendriks tried to close it in the ninth and was one out away before the McKenna single and Mancini homer.

Down 7-4, Baltimore added one more run in the bottom half on Mullins' deep sacrifice fly but it wasn't enough.

The Orioles lost first baseman Ryan Mountcastle after Cease hit him in the left forearm in the first inning. Baltimore said X-rays were negative as Mountcastle suffered a contusion and left before the second.
