Jose Abreu drives in 4 as White Sox defeat Twins

[July 21, 2021]  Jose Abreu drove in four runs, including three on a home run that followed Billy Hamilton's go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning, and Yoan Moncada also homered to lift the host Chicago White Sox to a 9-5 victory against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night.

Chicago salvaged at least a split of the four-game series after the teams swapped wins in a doubleheader Monday.

The five-run outburst in the eighth boosted the White Sox to their fourth victory in five games. Ahead 4-1 after four innings, Chicago entered the bottom of the eighth trailing 5-4 after Minnesota's Jorge Polanco drilled a go-ahead, two-run homer in the top of the inning.

Max Kepler and Josh Donaldson also homered for the Twins and finished with two hits apiece. Abreu and Moncada had three hits each.

White Sox left-hander Dallas Keuchel pitched five effective innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Despite blowing a save, Ryan Burr (2-0) was the winner in relief, allowing two runs and three hits in the eighth.

Jorge Alcala fell to 2-4 with the loss, yielding three runs on one hit and two walks, with one strikeout, in one-third inning.

Twins left fielder Luis Arraez left the game in the fourth inning with right knee soreness. The Twins said he is day-to-day.

Chicago shortstop Tim Anderson went 0-for-5 with a strikeout, ending his career-best hitting streak at 16 games.

Making his fourth start against Chicago this season, Twins rookie right-hander Bailey Ober spaced four runs, three earned, and five hits in five innings with one walk and four strikeouts.

Chicago loaded the bases with one out in the sixth against reliever Caleb Thielbar, but he and Alex Colome collaborated to escape further trouble. Colome recorded the final out, getting Seby Zavala on a weak grounder back to the mound to keep the White Sox ahead 4-3.

The Twins threatened in the seventh, but Brian Goodwin made a sliding catch on a sinking liner hit by Nelson Cruz with two on and two out to preserve the advantage.
