Route 66 Garage Sales off to a great start on Friday

[June 14, 2021]   LINCOLN - This weekend is the Route 66 Garage Sales in Lincoln. Around town there are several individual garage sales at homes of Lincoln residents. There are also several fundraising sales going on with lots of inventory for shoppers to peruse.

On Friday morning, the Oasis Senior Center was busy as a bunch of bees checking out customers at the Grandma’s Attic sale. The entire Senior Center building was packed to the seams with merchandise and shoppers were loosening their purse strings for cool stuff and to help a very worthy cause.

The ladies at the checkout station in the main dining room at the Oasis said that it had been busy all morning, but not to worry if you are going today, there is still plenty to choose from.

The Humane Society of Logan County was also busy. With a large fan or two moving the air in the special events barn of the Logan County Fairgrounds, it didn’t feel like it was above 90 outside, and shoppers seemed to be in no hurry to escape the heat as they examined all that was being offered at the sale.

On Fifth Street there were only a few vendors at Postville Park, but there were also a few shoppers and all seemed content with the way the first day of the weekend sale was going.

Small home-based business vendors filled the VFW on Fifth Street, and again everyone inside was in a happy mood. With the air conditioning turned on, shoppers enjoyed lingering at the various booths and visiting with the vendors as they made selections to carry home.

On a bright note, a conversation with Jim Harnacke of the local Marine Corps League revealed that in spite of the early morning fire on Friday at the Lincoln IGA, the Marines will have their annual cookout at the VFW on Saturday.

Harnacke said that IGA owner Charlie Lee had called him on Friday morning after the fire and assured him that provision had been made so that the marines could hold their annual event. He said that even though all the food products at the Lincoln IGA were inedible, Lee had reached out to the grocery in Clinton and made arrangements to fill as many orders as possible.

Thanks to Charlie, the marines will be able to have their fundraiser with the proceeds going to their annual Toys for Tots event in December as well as other projects to benefit local veterans.

When you are out and about today, also be sure to stop by the Habitat for Humanity of Logan County warehouse. Again this is an organization that does a lot of good in Logan County. The HFHLC relies 100 percent on donations and volunteers to do its good work. The sale at the warehouse this weekend as well as the raffle tickets being sold for a half-hog donated by Tarter Brothers of Lincoln will go to support the next home build for a deserving family in our community.

The charitable garage sales will run all day today and many individual sales will as well. If you love to look and occasionally make a purchase, then Lincoln is a great place to be today.
