MLB roundup: Rockies' German Marquez flirts with no-hitter

[June 30, 2021] German Marquez took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before settling for a complete-game one-hitter as the Colorado Rockies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-0 on Tuesday night in Denver.

Marquez (7-6) was bidding to become the second pitcher in franchise history to throw a no-hitter, but Ka'ai Tom led off the ninth with a sharp single to right.

The 26-year-old right-hander, who also doubled twice, walked one, hit a batter and struck out five while throwing just 92 pitches.

Elias Diaz homered and singled, Charlie Blackmon had three hits and Trevor Story, Joshua Fuentes and Garrett Hampson added two hits each for the Rockies.

Yankees 11, Angels 5

Gary Sanchez, Aaron Judge and Miguel Andujar homered as New York enjoyed a rare productive showing at the plate and survived allowing two homers to Shohei Ohtani in a victory over visiting Los Angeles.

New York set a season high for runs, marking the second time this season it scored at least 10. The Yankees also hit at least three homers for the 13th time, and they finished with 11 hits and drew nine walks.

Ohtani hit his 27th and 28th homers to take sole possession of the major league lead from Toronto Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He also hit his 12th and 13th homers this month to move into a tie with Tim Salmon (1996) and Albert Pujols (2005) for the team record for homers in June.

Nationals 4, Rays 3

Kyle Schwarber kept up his torrid homer pace, and Juan Soto and Victor Robles also went deep as host Washington held off Tampa Bay.

The Nationals won their third consecutive game and are 13-3 going back to June 13. The Rays dropped back-to-back games following a four-game winning streak.

Every position player in the Nationals lineup had one hit starting with Schwarber, who socked a leadoff home run. It was his 12th long ball in his past 10 games, tying the major league record for a 10-game span. Albert Belle set the mark in September 1995.

Rangers 5, Athletics 4

Joey Gallo continued his home run tear with bombs to right and left field, lifting visiting Texas over Oakland in the opener of a three-game series. the Rangers won a fourth straight game for the first time this season.

Gallo's homers came in the fourth and sixth innings and were his 17th and 18th of the year. He now has five homers in his past three games.

Oakland got solo homers from Jed Lowrie, Mitch Moreland and Matt Chapman.

Orioles 13, Astros 3

Cedric Mullins recorded his third game with at least four hits this season and Maikel Franco delivered a bases-clearing double that keyed a five-run eighth inning as Baltimore got an easy road victory over Houston.

The Orioles clinched their first road series victory since taking two of three against the Seattle Mariners, May 3-5. Baltimore entered the series having lost 22 of the past 23 road games.

Franco had three hits and scored three runs, and Baltimore got two hits apiece from Austin Hays, Anthony Santander, Ramon Urias and Austin Wynns. Hays knocked in three runs.

Red Sox 7, Royals 6

J.D. Martinez sliced a go-ahead, two-run double in the sixth inning as part of a four-RBI night, leading Boston past visiting Kansas City.

Martinez (2-for-2) reached base four times to pace a 12-hit attack for the Red Sox, who ran their winning streak to five. Boston came from behind for the second straight night, extending its major league lead for such victories to 27.

Michael A. Taylor (3-for-3, three RBIs) and Ryan O'Hearn (3-for-5) each slugged two-run home runs among 13 hits for the Royals, who have lost seven straight.

Blue Jays 9, Mariners 3

Marcus Semien had a three-run homer and a two-run double, Bo Bichette hit a three-run homer and host Toronto beat Seattle in Buffalo.

Semien also had a single to lead a 15-hit barrage in the opener of a three-game series as the Blue Jays won their third straight.

Ty France hit a three-run home run and added a double for the Mariners.

Brewers 2, Cubs 1

Brandon Woodruff struck out eight batters over six strong innings, and Milwaukee held on to beat visiting Chicago for its seventh victory in a row. Christian Yelich and Jace Peterson drove in one run apiece for the Brewers.

Patrick Wisdom went 1-for-3 with an RBI double to lead the Cubs at the plate, and Joc Pederson had two hits. Chicago has dropped five consecutive games.

Woodruff (7-3) limited the Cubs to one run on four hits and three walks. Josh Hader pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 20th save in as many opportunities. Chicago's Zach Davies (5-5) gave up two runs on two hits in four innings.

Dodgers 3, Giants 1

Max Muncy hit a home run and Walker Buehler pitched 6 2/3 strong innings as host Los Angeles pulled off a sweep of a two-game series against rival San Francisco.

Muncy's home run was his seventh in nine games against the Giants this season. Chris Taylor added a two-run double as the Dodgers won their fifth consecutive game since they were no-hit by the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. Buehler (8-1) gave up one unearned run and just three hits, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Steven Duggar had an RBI double for the Giants, who were playing without Mike Yastrzemski after the outfielder fouled a ball off his right leg on Monday.

Phillies 4, Marlins 3

Vince Velasquez tossed seven shutout innings, Rhys Hoskins homered and host Philadelphia defeated Miami.

Velasquez (3-2) gave up two hits, struck out seven, walked none and retired the final 13 batters he faced.

Jose Alvarado allowed two runs but recorded the final four outs to earn his third save.

Mets 4, Braves 3

Francisco Lindor's two-out RBI single completed a four-run seventh-inning rally and sparked visiting New York to a win over Atlanta.

The Mets, who trailed 3-0 entering the inning, tied the game on James McCann's three-run homer, a blow that knocked out Atlanta starter Charlie Morton. It was McCann's seventh homer, four of them coming in June.

New York took the lead against reliever A.J. Minter (1-3) when pinch hitter Jose Peraza doubled and scored on Lindor's sharp single to center.

Padres 5, Reds 4

Tommy Pham went 3-for-4 with a solo homer while eight hurlers pitched in to help visiting San Diego beat Cincinnati for its 10th win in 11 games.

Following a 52-minute weather delay at the start, the contest turned into a bullpen game for both teams, with neither starter lasting past the third inning and the teams combining to use 16 pitchers.

Reliever Emilio Pagan (4-0) struck out the side in a perfect eighth to earn the win. Mark Melancon pitched the ninth for his major-league-leading 25th save for the Padres, who have won all five meetings with the Reds this season.

White Sox 7, Twins 6

Gavin Sheets went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in his major league debut to lead host Chicago to a victory over Minnesota.

Andrew Vaughn also had two hits and Leury Garcia singled, walked and drove in two runs for first-place Chicago, which improved to 25-12 against American League Central teams, including 6-1 against Minnesota.

Lucas Giolito (6-5) picked up the win allowing three runs on six hits in six-plus innings. It was the ninth straight game in which Giolito, who walked one and struck out one, pitched at least six innings.

Cardinals 3, Diamondbacks 2

Carlos Martinez allowed just one run on four hits in six innings as St. Louis edged visiting Arizona. Alex Reyes blanked the Diamondbacks for the final two innings to earn his 19th save.

Martinez (4-9) struck out six batters while permitting four hits and two walks as he snapped out of his June funk. He was 0-5 with a 13.73 ERA in the month, with 31 hits and 17 walks allowed in 19 2/3 innings.

The Cardinals won for the third time in four games while the Diamondbacks lost for the 23rd time in 25 games.
