Top 25 roundup: No. 12 Oklahoma State upends No. 2 Baylor

[March 13, 2021] Cade Cunningham scored 20 of his game-high 25 points in the second half as No. 12 Oklahoma State knocked off No. 2 Baylor 83-74 in the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament Friday in Kansas City, Mo.

The Cowboys will face No. 13 Texas on Saturday evening in the tournament final.

Cunningham hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Oklahoma State a 66-65 advantage, and the teams took turns at exchanging the lead. The Cowboys finished the game on a 13-2 run.

Oklahoma State has won eight of its past nine games, with the only loss coming by 11 at Baylor last week. Six of those wins have come against ranked teams. MaCio Teague led the Bears (22-2) with 17 points.

No. 3 Illinois 90, Rutgers 68

Ayo Dosunmu produced 23 points and six assists while Kofi Cockburn contributed 18 points and 12 rebounds as the Fighting Illini coasted over Rutgers in a Big Ten tournament quarterfinal game at Indianapolis.

The second-seeded Fighting Illini (21-6) picked up their fifth consecutive win overall. Cockburn posted his 16th double-double of the season, helping Illinois avenge a 91-88 loss to the Scarlet Knights in December.

Ron Harper Jr. led seventh-seeded Rutgers (15-11) with 21 points, with Jacob Young adding 13 points and Geo Baker scoring 10 points.

No. 4 Michigan 79, Maryland 66

Mike Smith had 18 points and a Big Ten tournament-record 15 assists as the Wolverines defeated the Terrapins in a heated quarterfinal game at Indianapolis.

Franz Wagner and Eli Brooks contributed 16 points apiece for the top-seeded Wolverines (20-3). Eric Ayala led eighth-seeded Maryland (16-13) with 19 points. Darryl Morsell supplied 16 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Michigan coach Juwan Howard and Maryland coach Mark Turgeon exchanged words during a timeout midway through the second half. Howard had to be restrained by his assistants and was assessed a double technical, resulting in his ejection. Turgeon was assessed one technical.

No. 5 Iowa 62, Wisconsin 57

Luka Garza scored 24 points and collected nine rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the Hawkeyes past the Badgers in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals at Indianapolis.

Jordan Bohannon scored 11 points as Iowa (21-7) advanced to the Big Ten semifinals for the first time since 2006. The third-seeded Hawkeyes will face No. 3 and second-seeded Illinois on Saturday.

D'Mitrik Trice scored 19 points and Micah Potter recorded 17 points and eight rebounds for the sixth-seeded Badgers (17-12). Brad Davison added 10 points for Wisconsin, which lost for the sixth time in eight games.

No. 6 Alabama 85, Mississippi State 48

Jahvon Quinerly scored 14 points as the top-seeded Crimson Tide flexed their depth throughout their victory over the ninth-seeded Bulldogs in a Southeastern Conference tournament quarterfinal game at Nashville.

Quinerly led a solid performance by the Crimson Tide's reserves, who totaled 47 points -- almost equaling Mississippi State's overall output. Juwan Gary made all four of his shots and finished with 11 points and Keon Ellis had six points and seven rebounds for Alabama (22-6).

Iverson Molinar led ninth-seeded Mississippi State (15-14) with 18 points on 7-for-18 shooting and Tolu Smith totaled 13 points and six rebounds.

No. 7 Houston 77, Tulane 52

DeJon Jarreau recorded a triple-double and the Cougars turned another stifling defensive effort into a blowout win over the Green Wave in the American Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals in Fort Worth, Texas.

Jarreau totaled 15 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to notch the first triple-double for Houston (22-3) since Bo Outlaw achieved the feat in 1993. Quentin Grimes, the conference Co-Player of the Year, shot just 4 of 12 en route to matching Jarreau for game-high scoring honors.

After combining for 46 points in a first-round win over Tulsa on Thursday, Jordan Walker and Jaylen Forbes totaled just 18 points on 8-of-24 shooting for Tulane (10-13).

No. 8 Arkansas 70, Missouri 64

JD Notae scored 27 points and Justin Smith had 16 as the Razorbacks defeated the Tigers in the SEC tournament quarterfinals in Nashville.

Davonte Davis added 11 points as the second-seeded Razorbacks (22-5) won their ninth consecutive game.

Xavier Pinson scored 14 points and Dru Smith added 11 to lead the seventh-seeded Tigers (16-9), who are still in a strong position for an NCAA Tournament bid.

No. 9 Ohio State 87, No. 20 Purdue 78 (OT)

The Buckeyes squandered an 18-point halftime lead, but Seth Towns provided an overtime spark in a victory over the Boilermakers in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament at Indianapolis.

Duane Washington Jr. led the fifth-seeded Buckeyes (20-8) with 20 points. CJ Walker scored 18 points and E.J. Liddell had 17 before fouling out in OT.

For the fourth-seeded Boilermakers (18-9), Trevion Williams had 16 of his 26 points in the second half, when Purdue outscored Ohio State 41-23 to force the overtime. He also had 14 rebounds, and teammate Jaden Ivey had 19 points.

No. 15 Florida State 69, North Carolina 66

Balsa Koprivica amassed 17 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots to help the Seminoles edge the Tar Heels in an Atlantic Coast Conference tournament semifinal.

Second-seeded Florida State (16-5) will try to win its first ACC tournament title since 2012 and second all-time when it opposes Georgia Tech on Saturday night.

North Carolina (18-10) came up short in its bid to win its first ACC tournament championship since 2016 and its 19th overall. Caleb Love led the Tar Heels with 13 points, and Armando Bacot finished with 12 points and six rebounds.

No. 17 Creighton 59, Connecticut 56

Damien Jefferson's 14 points and 12 rebounds and a clutch defensive stand on the Huskies' final possession lifted the Bluejays to a win in the Big East Conference tournament semifinals in New York.

Marcus Zegarowski added 13 points for the second-seeded Bluejays (20-7), who will meet eighth-seeded Georgetown in the championship game Saturday night. Christian Bishop scored 11 as Creighton survived a slow start and 37.1 percent shooting overall.

James Bouknight scored 14 points for Connecticut (15-7) while Adama Sanogo and Isaiah Whaley added 13 apiece.

No. 19 San Diego State 77, Nevada 70

Mountain West Player of the Year Matt Mitchell scored a team-high 24 points, helping the Aztecs move into the conference tournament final with a victory over the Wolf Pack in Las Vegas.

Top-seeded San Diego State (22-4) will face second-seeded Utah State for the title. The Aggies beat third-seeded Colorado State 62-50 late Friday night.

Jordan Schakel collected a game-high-tying nine rebounds to complement 15 points for San Diego State while Trey Pulliam added 13 points and Lamont Butler had 10. Grant Sherfield had a game-high 25 points, Warren Washington 19 and Desmond Cambridge 17 for fifth-seeded Nevada (16-10).

No. 23 Colorado 72, No. 24 Southern California 70

D'Shawn Schwartz broke a tie by slamming a put-back dunk with 3.3 seconds left, and the Buffaloes beat the Trojans in a Pac-12 tournament semifinal game in Las Vegas.

McKinley Wright IV returned from taking an elbow to the head to finish with 24 points, and Jeriah Horne scored 19 for third-seeded Colorado (22-7), which will play fifth-seeded Oregon State in the title game on Saturday night. The Beavers beat top-seeded Oregon 75-64 earlier Friday.

Evan Mobley had 26 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots for the second-seeded Trojans (22-7). Tahj Eaddy scored all 11 of his points during a 14-2 run by USC in the final 3:38 that tied the game at 70.
