Lincoln Arts Institute May exhibit to feature the works of Lisa Lofgren

In May, the Lincoln Arts Institute will host a solo exhibition by Bloomington professional artist Lisa Lofgren. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2021 from 5 to 8 pm at the LAI Gallery, 112 S. Mclean St., Lincoln. The show, entitled “Vol. 1 Movement Toward the Open” will include both prints and constructions, showcasing the artist’s sensitivity in blending the visual and tactile. She also acknowledges the contributions of photographs, influences and writings by Matt Erickson and constructions and assistance of Ava Erickson in the creation of the artworks.

The works tell of a collection of knowledge through time, a story which Lofgren reveals by combining book forms, waxed photo transfers, 167-year-old remains of home restorations, clay constructions, and discarded printing artefacts. She asks the question, “Are the sacred and profane or ancient and present-day moments really that different from each other?” The artist relies on the potential of the materials and constructions to convey truths we can learn through observing and questioning - if we ourselves are open.

Lofgren is an artist, educator, and founder of Together Press, a community printmaking and papermaking facility in coordination with cometogetherstudios in Bloomington, Illinois. The art fun-house provides studios, classes, resources, mentorship, and camaraderie through various creative means and is where she calls home.

She received a BFA from the University of Wyoming, her home state, and an MFA from Illinois State University where she has served as registrar for University Galleries since 2018.

The gallery will also be open on Friday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. through June 4, with a family hands-on porch printing session with the artist from 6 – 8 pm on May 21, and guided tours of the exhibition by the artist from 6:30 – 7:30 pm on May 14 and 28. The events will follow current Covid guidelines, including masking, distancing and a capacity of 25 visitors at a time.
