Mount Pulaski hands Springfield Lutheran a 20-2 loss

The Hilltoppers keep pounding out the hits and pumping out the runs this season. On Friday afternoon Mount Pulaski annihilated the Springfield Lutheran Crusaders 20-2 behind an offensive onslaught led by Drew Martin. Martin had two home runs and five RBIs to lead Mount Pulaski to the win.

The Hilltoppers scored five times in the first inning. Grant Davis had a two-run single to lead the first inning attack. Other runs were scored with the help of an error, a passed ball and a wild pitch. Mount Pulaski was quick to jump out to a 5-0 lead.

Evan Cooper singled to start the second inning. He scored on the home run to right by Martin. Mount Pulaski was on top 7-0.

The Hilltoppers were just getting to their big inning when they reached the third. They plated eight runs in the third inning, with Martin crushing a three-run homer to make the score 10-1. Later in the inning, Landon Smith would score on a wild pitch and Gavin Smith would score on an RBI single by Lucas Kuhlman. Garrett Fitzpatrick added an RBI single to the inning. A.J. Bailey’s two-run single to center capped the inning off and Mount Pulaski led 15-1.

Another RBI single from Kuhlman made the score 16-1 in the fourth inning.

The Hilltoppers added four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Ethan Payne scored on a sacrifice fly by Evan Cooper. Gavin Smith added a line drive double to left to score two more runs. Nolan Deibert contributed an RBI single to complete the scoring and Mount Pulaski led 20-2 at this point.

The only run opportunities for the Crusaders came in the bottom of the second and fourth innings.

Two strikeouts and a groundout in the bottom of the fifth inning ended the game for the Crusaders.

Evan Cooper was the winning pitcher for Mount Pulaski. Cooper threw three innings and allowed just one run on two hits. He struck out five batters.

Gavin Smith pitched one inning in relief. He allowed one run and struck out three batters. Luke Farris pitched the last inning of the game. Farris struck out two batters.

Aaron Shipman suffered the loss for Springfield Lutheran. Shipman surrendered 15 hits and 11 runs in two and two-thirds innings. Only five of the runs were earned.

Mount Pulaski had 16 hits.

Lucas Kuhlman led the offense with a 4-for-5 performance. He batted in two runs and scored once. Drew Martin was 2-for-3, crushing two home runs and batting in five runs. A.J. Bailey and Garrett Fitzpatrick also recorded multi-hit games. Evan Cooper, Luke Farris, Landon Smith, Gavin Smith, Grant Davis and Nolan Deibert rounded out the offense with hits for Mount Pulaski.

Mount Pulaski improves to 8-0 on the season.

The Hilltoppers will play today at Athens. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
