Farnam tosses a shutout as Lady Railers blank New Berlin 10-0

[May 12, 2021]  Cara Farnam was in the circle on Monday versus New Berlin and the sophomore pitched a one-hit shutout against the Pretzels, leading Lincoln to a 10-0 win at home.

The Railers rattled the bats big time in the second inning, putting eight runs on the board. Malena Kirgan started the inning by drawing a walk. Chloe Johnston followed by crushing a double on the fly to centerfield. A single by Cassie Bridge brought home Malena Kirgan with the first run of the game. Johnston scored the Lady Railers second run on a passed ball. Bridge scored for Lincoln on a sacrifice bunt by Riley Tungate. With one out and the top of the order due up again, it was Emily Paulus with the triple to center. Abbie Glenn drove Paulus home when she doubled to left field. Glenn took third on a wild pitch and scored after tagging up on the fly ball by Farnam. With two outs, the Lady Railers were on top 5-0. Ryen Stoltzenburg started another rally with a single to third. After a walk to Mya Kirgan and then a passed ball, Lincoln had runners at second and third. Malena Kirgan drew a walk and in the meantime Mya Kirgan scored a run on a bad throw. Stoltzenburg then scored on a passed ball and Lincoln was up 7-0. A walk to Bridge loaded the bases for Tungate. Tungate singled to shortstop and the Lady Railers plated another run, with Malena Kirgan scurrying home. The inning ended on a groundout by Paulus but Lincoln was in the lead 8-0 after just two innings of play.

Two more runs crossed the plate for Lincoln in the bottom of the third inning. Glenn walked to start the inning. Farnam singled to left field. With Mya Kirgan up to bat, Glenn and Farnam each stole bases to advance into scoring position. Mya Kirgan’s sacrifice bunt scored Glenn. After a pitching change by the Pretzels, Farnam scored on a passed ball. Malena Kirgan flied out to left to end the inning, but Lincoln was up 10-0 with Farnam dealing from the circle.

Farnam got a double play to end the fourth inning for the Pretzels. In the fifth inning, the Pretzels had a runner reach base on an error, but after that Farnam shut New Berlin down in order to end the game.

The only hit allowed by Farnam was a leadoff double to center in the top of the third.

No damage was done and Farnam and the Lady Railers cruised to the 10-0 win.

Farnam’s five innings of work included one hit, two walks and four strikeouts.

The Lady Railers had eight hits on the afternoon versus the Pretzels. Chloe Johnston led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance. Emily Paulus, Abbie Glenn, Cara Farnam, Ryen Stoltzenburg, Cassie Bridge and Riley Tungate each had hits for Lincoln. Tungate had two RBIs in the game.

Kailyn Middleton took the loss for New Berlin. She lasted two and two-thirds innings. Jenna Long pitched in relief of Middleton.

Lincoln improves to 6-8 on the season.

The Lady Railers will play at Teutopolis today at 4:30 p.m.
