[October 12, 2021]   Heartland Community College is welcoming the return of the Heartland Harvest 5K race on October 23.

After going virtual last year due to the pandemic (participants ran whenever they wanted to throughout the month of October and submitted their race times), the Harvest 5K will return to the campus of Heartland Community College (HCC) in Normal.

The 5K course will lead runners through Heartland Community College's Normal campus on Raab Road to the Corn Crib and back, finishing at the Fitness and Recreation Center.

Also returning to competition this year is the “Pass the President Challenge.” HCC President Keith Cornille is challenging any Heartland student running in the race to “Pass the President.” If that student posts a better time than Cornille does in the 5K, he’ll personally pay that student back their race registration fee.

“After taking a year away from much of these activities we appreciate the opportunity to gather safely for a College event,” said Cornille. “We are asking all guests and participants to follow our safety protocols at the event to and have fun for a good cause.”

As Cornille points out, no matter who pays the race registration fee, the money will be going to help area students. The Heartland Harvest 5K is a fundraising event that benefits HCC Foundation scholarships, creating access and opening doors for members of the community.

The President’s challenge is specifically extended to Heartland students, but the 5K is open to all runners. Medals for the top three runners in each male and female age divisions. Overall male and female winners will be excluded from age group winners. Runners will be chip timed.

Participants can register in advance for the race online via Heartland.edu or register on site in the Fitness and Recreation Center beginning at 7:30 a.m. race day.

Advance registration for the Heartland Harvest 5K is $35.00 ($25.00 for HCC students) if received by October 22. Race day registration is $40. More registration information can be found at www.heartland.edu/foundation

Heartland Community College requires masks to be in all campus buildings and outdoors in group settings, unless eating or drinking. At the 5K event, registered participants will not have to wear masks while racing, but masks will be required for other attendees and at all other times for the racers. See the College’s Standard of Care for more information.
