To the editor:

Your coverage of the Abraham Lincoln Chapter NSDAR and American Legion Post 263’s event showcasing the Exchange Club of Rome, Georgia’s “A Call to Honor: Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Replica” was extraordinary! We greatly appreciate all of the time and energy spent producing and reporting about the 100th Commemoration of the Tomb. We had visitors from all over Central Illinois due to the excellent work by TV channels 3, 17, 20, and 25 plus the wonderful newspaper articles by the Decatur Herald & Review, Lincoln Courier, Lincoln Daily News and New Herald News.

Many Lincoln and Logan County community thank yous need to be extended as well. First, a huge thank you to the American Legion Post 263 for co-hosting and providing the exhibit venue. Their members helped with setup and takedown. Bob Sullivan and the Color Guard from the American Legion presented the Colors during the opening ceremony of the commemoration. We would like to recognize Lincoln Mayor Tracy Welch and numerous city officials who attended the observance for their participation and the issuing of the Constitution Week Proclamation. Other thank yous include: the Patriot Guard and Joe Schaler for the American flags along Route 66, Logan County Tourism Bureau, Comfort Inn and Suites of Lincoln, Lesleigh Bennett, Debbie’s Downtown Floral, Lincoln Printers, Guzzardo’s, Deep Roots, Guest House, and Café Billiards.

Additionally, we wish to convey our gratitude to the participating schools: Central School, Chester-East Lincoln, and Mount Pulaski Grade School, Washington – Monroe and West Lincoln – Broadwell for bringing their students to view the Tomb Replica. These children are the citizens of the future and the reason we can never forget the service of the Unknown Soldier.

Finally, we wish to convey our gratitude to Bill and Wayne from the Exchange Club of Rome, Georgia. The passion you displayed in your presentation of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is what makes this one of the most patriotic and moving exhibits we have ever experienced. We cannot thank you enough for all you did during the three days you were in Lincoln. Your presentation made this event a resounding success. It was truly an honor to provide the Tomb Replica to our community.

Yours in DAR Service,
Marjorie Aper, Regent
Abraham Lincoln Chapter NSDAR
