G League to begin Nov. 5 with Showcase Cup

[September 15, 2021] The NBA G League will open the season with the Showcase Cup on Nov. 5.

 


The league's 29 teams will be separated into four regional pods, where each team will play 12 games against one another.

The teams with the best winning percentage in each pod, plus the next four teams across the league in terms of winning percentage, will compete for the Showcase Cup at a single-elimination tournament during the G League Winter Showcase from Dec. 19-22.

The remaining teams will each play two games outside of the Showcase Cup.

Three new franchises will be in action this season in the NBA's developmental league.

The Birmingham Squadron make their debut against the Greensboro Swarm on Nov. 5. The Motor City Cruise open against the Cleveland Charge on Nov. 6. The Fort Worth, Texas-based Capitanes de la Ciudad de Mexico begin play Nov. 5 against the Memphis Hustle.

Following the Showcase Cup, team records will be reset. The 36-game regular season will begin on Dec. 27, bringing each team's total games played to 50. The top six teams in each conference quality for the playoffs.

The NBA G League Ignite and the Capitanes will compete in the Showcase Cup but will not take part in the 36-game regular season.
