[September 25, 2021] Carolina Panthers star running back Christian McCaffrey is expected to miss a few weeks with an ailing hamstring while rookie cornerback Jaycee Horn will be sidelined for much longer with a broken foot.

Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said Friday that Horn would be placed on injured reserve. He broke his foot in three places, Rhule said, and Horn was consulting his family and seeking medical advice before determining his plan of action. The first-round pick could be done for the season.

NFL Network reported the Panthers are not planning on putting McCaffrey on injured reserve. A stint on injured reserve would mean McCaffrey would be out for at least three weeks.

Both injuries occurred in the Panthers' 24-9 victory over the host Houston Texans on Thursday.

Rookie Chuba Hubbard saw an increased workload after McCaffrey injured his hamstring during the second quarter. Hubbard had 11 carries for 52 yards and three receptions for 27 yards on Thursday.

Horn left the game with an injury to his right foot. The timetable for recovery from surgery would have Horn sidelined late into the season or even through the end of the campaign.

Horn injured his foot while backpedaling on a pass play during the third quarter. Horn, who was not contacted on the play, immediately motioned to the sideline for assistance.

"Jaycee will be back. Jaycee Horn is a special, special, special football player," Rhule said of the 21-year-old, who is the son of former NFL wide receiver Joe Horn.

Horn has recorded five tackles and one interception in three games since being selected with the eighth overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft out of South Carolina. He was the first defensive player taken in the draft.

McCaffrey, 25, has 52 carries for 201 yards and a touchdown to go along with 16 receptions for 163 yards in three games this season. He is tied with Derrick Henry of the Tennessee Titans for the league lead in carries.

He became the third player in NFL history to record at least 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in the same season in 2019.

McCaffrey, however, was limited to three games in 2020 due to multiple injuries.
