[April 19, 2022]    After falling behind 5-1 early to Lexington on Saturday, the Mount Pulaski Hilltoppers cranked up the offense in the later innings and came back to defeat the Minutemen 8-5.

The Hilltoppers scored a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Landon Smith.

Lexington plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the 5-1 lead.

Mount Pulaski added a run in the top of the third inning after Landon Smith doubled and eventually scored on a passed ball.

The Hilltoppers tied the game in the fifth inning. Gavin Smith’s two-run single to center was the big hit of the inning. Senior Lucas Kuhlman then tied the game on a base hit for the Hilltoppers.

Jackson Fricke gave the Hilltoppers a 7-5 lead in the top of the sixth inning with his two-run single to center.

The Hilltoppers added one more run for good measure in the top of the seventh inning. Kuhlman and Kolin Gibbs led off the inning with singles. Gibbs would advance around the bases on a fielder’s choice and a steal of third. He would come racing home with a key insurance run on a catcher’s error.

The Hilltoppers defense helped Landon Smith preserve the save with a game-ending double play in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Hilltoppers leave Lexington with the 8-5 win on a very cold and breezy afternoon.

Mount Pulaski had 12 hits off Lexington pitching.

Liam Smith, Landon Smith, Jackson Fricke and Lucas Kuhlman each had two hits. AJ Bailey, Gavin Smith, Kolin Gibbs and Colt Selinger each had one hit.

AJ Bailey (3-0) got the win for Mount Pulaski. Bailey threw five and one-third innings, allowing six hits and five runs. He struck out six batters and walked four.

Landon Smith pitched the final inning and two-thirds, allowing just one hit while earning the save for the Hilltoppers.

Mount Pulaski improves to 9-3 on the season.

The Hilltoppers will host Heyworth on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Veterans Park.
