Hilltoppers outlast Spartans 6-4

[April 27, 2022]    Mount Pulaski hosted the Southeast Spartans on Friday afternoon and the Hilltoppers broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the third inning and went on to claim a 6-4 victory. 

 

The Hilltoppers took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run single by Evan Cooper and an RBI single by Liam Smith.

 

Southeast tied the game 3-3 in the top of the third inning after Mount Pulaski’s starter, AJ Bailey, allowed three walks and a double. 

 

The Hilltoppers went ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the third inning when Clay Aylesworth, who had singled earlier, scored on a wild pitch.

 

The Hilltoppers added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jackson Fricke scored on a passed ball.

 

Landon Smith scored the Hilltoppers final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Smith had doubled with one out in the inning and came around to score on a catcher’s error. 

 

The Hilltoppers hold on to win 6-4 after Liam Smith shut down the Spartans in the top of the seventh inning.

 

Liam Smith (2-0) gets the win in relief for Mount Pulaski. Smith allowed just one unearned run on three hits in four innings of work. He struck out five batters. 

 

AJ Bailey started the game for Mount Pulaski. Bailey tossed three innings, allowing three runs on two hits. Bailey struck out three batters and walked three. 

 

Mount Pulaski had six hits versus the Spartans. 

 

Liam Smith was 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Hilltoppers offense. 

 

Evan Cooper, Landon Smith, Gavin Smith and Clay Aylesworth each had a hit for Mount Pulaski. 

 

Mount Pulaski improved to 12-3 on the season.
