Women's rights and gun laws: choosing candidates in the next election

To the editor:

I am so sad and dismayed; angry and energized over two issues facing us today:

  1. The SCOTUS’ plan to repeal Roe V Wade was exposed. We cannot retreat to the days of no protection of a woman’s right to reproductive freedom and privacy. We cannot go back to dangerous back alley abortions by dangerous charlatans. Desperate women will seek help wherever they can find it.

Roe v Wade ensured safe, medical treatment. The poor will be mostly affected as the rich can travel anywhere in the world for their abortions. Several states now have total bans, some even for rape and incest. So a 12 year girl would now have to carry her daddy’s baby to full term. Then what! This is a step back to the dark ages. Women have risen up! This is an issue of choices, privacy, patient/doctor confidentiality, and safe medical treatment.

  2. The mass shooting of 19 fourth graders and 2 teachers in Uvale, Texas raises the continuous debate about the 2nd Amendment. It is time to outlaw the AR15. The track record of this military grade weapon shows that it has been responsible for all the past mass shootings tied to teen shooters. This weapon must be totally outlawed!

[to top of second column in this letter]

Why can a teenager buy an AR15 when they can’t buy liquor or cigarettes? I can buy an AR15 but I go into a data base if I buy Sudafed!

We need stricter laws for gun purchases, the red line law, background checks and mental health screenings for “suicide by cops”. We need as strict guidelines as a woman has to go through to get an abortion! I can hear the arguments already but the AR15 cannot keep killing our children!

  1. I will not support or vote for any candidate that doesn’t support Roe v Wade or the AR15 issue. Any candidate that receives financial gifts from the NRA is a NO vote! The midterms are our best chance to make a big difference.

Thank you, Rebecca Drake
