[August 10, 2022]   As the 86th Annual Logan County Fair neared the end Sunday afternoon, a 56-year-tradition continued as several cakes were baked and judged before a live audience, then later auctioned off to the highest bidders to raise money for 4-H.

Judging the cakes was Elizabeth (Carter) Wright, who used to participate in the cake classic. Wright received top prize for her spice cake at the 2011 Cake Classic.

Before the cakes were auctioned off, Cake Classic Superintendent Rebekah Johnson thanked several sponsors. These included McEntire’s Home Appliance and TV, who supplied the ovens; Peggy’s Place, who supplied the boxes; Darlene Begolka, who donated Tupperware; and Action Jackson Lawncare, who sponsored participation awards.

At the auction, the seven cakes auctioned by Mike Maske raised a total of $6,400.

As in past years, this entire amount will go directly to the Logan County 4-H to support programs throughout the year.

After the results of the Cake Classic judging were announced, each winner brought his or her cake up to be auctioned by Maske. Maske asked each baker to describe the cake and hold it up for the audience to see during the bidding.

Once each cake was auctioned, the baker posed for a photo with the buyer plus Logan County Fair Queen Emma Stoltzenburg, Junior Miss Isabella Pollice and Little Miss Luci Bobell.

Jim Xamis was the top bidder for the first-place cake, with a bid of $1,500. Continuing a tradition he started a few years ago, Xamis said he wanted to donate the cake to be sold again in memory of Harold Goodman and raise even more money for the 4-H foundation.

The top bidder this time was Harold Goodman’s son, Stacy Goodman, with a bid of $1,200.

Top four cakes:

First place: Gail Ubbenga - White Butter Cake.

Ubbenga said, “It is one I had not made before.” Something Ubbenga found interesting was that it required 12 egg whites.

Top bidder for this cake was Jim Xamis at $1,500 with Stacy Goodman then bidding $1,200 after Xamis donated the cake back.

Second place: Christy Cross-Red Velvet Cake.

Cross said, “It is one that is good.” She also said it was her first time entering baking events.

Top bidder was Darcie Culler at $1,300.

Third place: Mary Johnson - Chocolate Cake.

Johnson said, “I finally got a top prize.” She was thankful for all who support 4-H through the cake auction.

Top bidder was “Action” Jackson Johnson at $400.

Fourth place: Joyce Conrady - Angel Food Cake.

Conrady said, “Thank you to everyone backing us to let us show what we can do.”

Top bidder was Marvin Bartman at $600.

Other classic cakes included:

Rose Harrold - Chiffon Cake.

Harrold said, “It takes many steps to make this cake.” Because it is a lighter cake with lemon in it, Harrold said it makes her think of summer.

Lauren DeJarnette won the bidding at $500.

Anna Catterson - German Chocolate Cake.

Because Catterson was not present for the auction, she was unavailable for comment.

Jim Xamis won the bidding at $600.

Peggy Sanders - Hummingbird Cake (Baker’s Choice). Sanders won the culinary contest Friday.

Sanders said, “This cake is made with banana, pineapple, coconut, walnut and salted caramel.”

Donald Stanfield, representing Chris Graue, won the bidding at $300.

While Johnson and Conrady are veterans of the competition, Gail Ubbenga, Christy Cross, Rose Harrold, Anna Catterson and Peggy Sanders are new faces.

These contestants enjoy baking and the friendly competition though the heat and humidity made baking a challenge. In addition, the auction is a great way to raise funds for the 4-H programs.

For many years, Mike Maske has been donating his services to the auction and always encourages bidders to go higher. As the grand total of $6,400 indicates, the donors love to support a great program and enjoy delicious cakes.
