Lincoln Daily News
welcomes letters of appreciation, information and
opinion on matters pertaining to the community.
Controversial issues:
As a
community we need to be able to talk openly about
matters that affect the quality of our lives. The
most effective and least offensive manner to get
your point across is to stick to the issue
and refrain from commenting on another person's
opinion. Letters that deviate from focusing on the
issue may be rejected or edited and marked as such.

To the editor: Physical
inactivity is linked to obesity and several chronic health
conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some
cancers. With obesity identified as a priority focus area of the
2021 Community Health Needs Assessment, Lincoln Memorial Hospital
encourages everyone in our community to get where you are going by
moving your body. Whether walking or cycling, incorporating activity
into your everyday routine is a sure way to achieve better health.
Cycling is a low impact, recreational activity available at your
local park, the LMH wellness trail and around your neighborhood. At
LMH, we have installed new bike racks and a fix-it station to
provide a place for local cyclists to pump up their tires and make
small repairs while on the road.

Furthermore, Lincoln Memorial Hospital encourages
Logan County communities to develop opportunities for safer walking
and bike riding. The Logan County Board, City of Lincoln and City of
Atlanta have approved bike path plans which is the first major step
toward accessing funding for bike-friendly communities. As the
community health director at LMH, I was inspired by the City of
Lincoln’s recent action to apply for an Illinois Transportation
Enhancement Program grant. If awarded, the grant will provide
funding for improvements to roads that will make it easier for
people to walk and ride safely across Lincoln Parkway. When
community leaders prioritize the development of cycling
infrastructure and programs, they are prioritizing the health and
quality of life of their residents.
