State Senator Sally Turner (R-Beason) released the following
statement in response to the Governor’s Budget Address:
“Although there are parts of the Governor's proposed budget that
sound great, such as increases for public safety, a much-needed
crime lab facility in Decatur, and human service increases to
address mental health issues, I have serious concerns about its
sustainability. This budget contains a continuous state
operational increase of roughly $2.5 billion. After the federal
stimulus money is spent and federal assistance programs end, I
fear the same problems that our state’s finances have been
plagued by for years will occur once again.
“The Governor’s one-year tax relief plan for gas and groceries
is not enough for struggling Illinois families. The tax relief
plan that the Senate Republican Caucus introduced earlier this
week provides the residents of our state with real permanent
relief, not election year gimmick relief. Property tax relief is
essential to growing our state’s middle class. Illinois
homeowners need more than a one-year property tax income credit
increase. They need and deserve solutions that don’t expire
after the election season, which is why we have offered a
permanent credit increase.
“I look forward to being a part of the budget discussion and
believe we have a real opportunity to provide necessary relief
for all Illinoisans. I hope that the Governor and Senate
Democrats include our voice and seriously consider our proposals
as we all seek to keep Illinoisans in Illinois and make Illinois
affordable again.”
