[July 01, 2022]    “CroHurst- - the Oldest Home in Logan County,” will be presented by Bob Neal for the Elkhart Historical Society’s Friday, July 22nd Dinner Lecture. Bob Neal’s love of historic houses has kept him occupied for many years, so much so that after the successful restoration of the Violet Scully mansion, it only encouraged him to do it again. Neal’s target… the former home of Jessie Gillett, arguably the oldest home in Logan County. Neal called upon the multi-talented Peter Niehaus for various aspects of the renovation, and he will add some of his insights during the lecture.

The home was built by John Latham, son of Judge James Latham, who was not only the first pioneer in Logan County, but also the first Indian Agent for the State of Illinois. The home was built around 1834, and upon John Latham’s death was purchased by John D. Gillett who willed the property to his daughter Jessie Gillett in 1891. Over the years, she created a beautiful mansion with manicured surroundings. The house passed down thru the family until being sold to John Gehlbach in 1968 and eventually was sold to Bob and Lynne Neal in 2009.

After extensive renovation to the house, and Bob’s ambitious gardening, the magic spell is in place, including the most spectacular sunsets in the county. A special gift is for those of you who can arrive in Elkhart by 3:30 on July 22 and would like to go on a special outing to “CroHurst House.” This “appetizer” is at no additional cost and will help you to appreciate the efforts of everyone who has ever been privileged to live and care for it.

This is an opportunity to see the exterior of the home and the magnificent landscaping combined with some background on Jessie Gillett, it’s proud mistress (1891-1947). This outing is timed to return everyone back to the village for their choice of shops or refreshments prior to the 5p doors opening at the restaurant.

Reservations are required.  To learn about pricing and make reservations call 217 947 2238.
