A free wellness class for cancer survivors will be offered this
month at the Memorial Wellness Center in Springfield.
Surviving to Thriving will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday,
June 25, at the Memorial Wellness Center, 228 W. Miller St.
Class participants will learn from experts about nutritious and
healthy eating and will participate in a demonstration of how to
prepare agua fresca (or flavored water) and a savory dish.
Participants will also learn breathing and mindfulness techniques
and hear from other cancer survivors and caregivers.
Representatives of Memorial Health service lines – cancer care,
behavioral health, home services and others – will be available to
answer questions.
“Life is different after a cancer diagnosis,” said Naomi Wands,
community cancer education coordinator at Memorial Health. “Next
steps for cancer survivors and their caregivers can sometimes be
challenging – physically, emotionally and mentally.”

In 2019, approximately 17 million Americans were cancer survivors, and the
number of cancer survivors living in the United States increases with each
passing year, according to the American Cancer Society. More early-detection
practices and screenings as well as advances in treatment are two factors that
have contributed to increased cancer survival rates.
