[June 13, 2022]  The Lincoln Public Library held its kickoff for this summer reading program on June 9th with fun filled activities for children on the Carnegie lawn.

Many children could be seen enjoying foam sprayed out from a foam cannon. Some were covered head to toe by the foam.

Even the library staff got involved in the fun.

Others enjoyed blowing bubbles with various size bubble wands.

United Community Bank staff provided donuts, juice boxes and water for hungry and thirsty children.

The theme for the summer reading program is “Reading Beyond the Beaten Path.”

Activities for various age groups will begin Monday, June 14. Crafts will be related to the theme.

Youth Services librarian Donna Cunningham said there will be activities in the library annex almost every day of the week from June 14th through July 21st.

Mondays from 2-2:30 p.m. and 2:30-3 p.m. are the stream programs for kindergarten through second graders.

Tuesdays from 2-2:30 p.m. and 2:30-3 p.m. are the explorer programs for third through fifth graders.

Each week, these groups will be doing a craft project.

For instance, the first week, kids in both programs will make a “perler beads” key chain. The craft is done by putting the beads in a plastic tray and ironing them. The next several weeks will include campfire art, nature art, let’s go camping craft, paracord bands and woodland animal crafts. During the final week’s program, kids will create campfire dioramas using graham crackers.

Wednesday story times will be offered in the library annex for babies through preschoolers. On June 15, these groups will build truck crafts. Cunningham said the kids will use rectangles, triangles and squares to make the truck. Other story times will include binocular crafts, sock bunny crafts, campfire crafts, space rocket crafts and bird nest crafts.

Thursdays at 10 a.m. will be programs for kids of various age groups. The program Thursday, June 16 will be a show by Juggling Jeff. Programs the other weeks will be Spoon Man, Music of Frogs by the Macon County Conservation District, Comedy Magician Richard Landry and MAD Science. The summer’s final program will be the Silly Safari, which has been a big hit with kids for several years.

Every other Friday on June 24, July 8 and July 22, teen time will be offered at 2 p.m. with activities oriented toward sixth through 12th grades. They will be making birdhouses, paracord bands and campfire dioramas using graham crackers.

From Monday, June 13 through Friday, June 17, a Jr. Chef Cooking program will be held from 2 -4 p.m. in the basement of the main library. Cunningham said there was quite a bit of interest in this program with many signing up to be a part of it.

Starting June 13, children will be able to turn in book logs to earn prizes. They will also receive reading badges each week.

Local artist and library employee Tony DiPasquale created this year’s summer reading program t-shirt design. DiPasquale also helped draw the animals for the reading program bulletin board and other artwork around the library stacks in the children's department.
As children read beyond the beaten path, it should be a fun filled summer at the Lincoln Public Library.
