[March 04, 2022]  This school year, Mount Pulaski High School has implemented an Advisory period during the middle of the school day.

Students are assigned to a faculty member in grade level groups of eight to 11 students and meet daily for 12 minutes right after lunch. During these meetings, students engage in discussions on a variety of topics while building stronger relationships with their peers and their teacher.

Advisory operates on a daily theme. Monday is referred to as “Message Monday.” Examples of Monday activities include writing letters to veterans, writing affirmations to other students and staff members, and creating public service announcements for the school building.

Tuesday is “Talk About it Tuesday.” On these days, a short video clip is presented on a topic and the group engages in a discussion about the topic. Some of the topics discussed to date are digital distractions, networking, judgment, change, having fun, positivity, civic duty, empathy, time management, and leading by example.

Wednesdays have become “Write About it Wednesdays” where students respond to a journal prompt in a running log and share their responses with their group if they choose to do so. Example prompts have included getting over a difficult experience, describing ways in which students see themselves changing, and telling about an awesome time in their lives.

“Think About it Thursdays” are used for free discussion among the group. Topics and questions are also provided if a group needs a starting point. Discussion prompts have included items like active listening, effective communication, setting goals, optimistic thinking, respect, manners, and stress.

Finally, Fridays are our “Fun Fridays” where we hold fun activities…sometimes in the gym with everyone, sometimes scavenger hunts in small groups, and sometimes small group games.

Regardless of the day, Advisory provides students an opportunity in the middle of the day to unwind and focus on the non-academic aspects of life to help them grow into even more amazing young adults! It is an opportunity to develop meaningful and appropriate relationships with peers and faculty members and will provide students with memories to last a lifetime.
