The Logan County Sheriff’s Office has received information concerning a telephone scam. The scam involved a person, not believed to be local, making a call to someone claiming to be a representative of the Publisher's Clearinghouse. The caller claimed a large sum of money had been awarded to the recipient and the y needed to verify personal information to receive the awarded money. The caller also made statements of coming to their address from another location to present the award. Once enough information was received by the caller, the call was ended.

Sometime later, recurring calls were received each requesting more information. The last calls were received from a number and showing on the recipient's caller ID as the Logan County Sheriff’s Office. The caller represented himself as Sheriff Mark Landers. Not enough information was provided that allowed the scam to be completed.

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Mark Landers will not make calls for businesses or entities for these purposes.

If there are any concerns about a call you have received, please follow these guidelines:

Never give out personal information over the phone to someone you have not personally identified.

Always ask questions to help identify who you are talking with and for who they work: business name, business phone number so you can call them back, employee's name for when you call back, their supervisor's name, etc.

If you are unsure, please call us at 217-732-4159 and speak to someone on duty to help you determine if the call was legitimate or not. We will come to you and speak with you personally about your issues if you would like.
