Sunday 4-H fundraiser meal and award ceremony well attended by the community

[March 21, 2022]   This year, instead of a spaghetti dinner in February, the Logan County 4-H Foundation hosted a pork barbecue dinner this past Sunday, March 13th.

The meal included coleslaw, cornbread, baked beans, and a whole hog prepared by Nuthatch Hill BBQ. The event was well attended by the community and supporters of 4-H.





At the entry into the Knights of Columbus ballroom, Logan County Extension staff Terri Miller and Carissa Davis along with various members of local 4-H clubs greeted guests. The meal was offered for a suggested donation of $10 per person. Though no one was turned away for a lack of donation, the basket on the table was filling quickly with cash that will go to support local 4-H programs in Logan County.

Along the food service line 4-H members, volunteers and the gang from Nuthatch were busy filling plates with exceptionally good food.



One of the attractions on the table was a sight enjoyed by many of the farm oriented guests, the whole hog nicely dressed and laying out for all to see. Brad Luckhart of Nuthatch said this is the normal manner in which he roasts his hogs for the making of barbecue. He was busy throughout the day cutting sections from the pig and getting it chopped into small pieces to be added to the large pans where sandwiches were being prepared.

Another part of the annual fundraiser was the silent auction featuring items donated by local individuals and businesses.



Many of those items were going for exceptionally high prices, such as the German Chocolate cake that was fetching a $250 bid half-way through the day.

Other items included in the silent auction included pet care baskets, Joyful Painting do it yourself kits, die cast farm tractors and other farm equipment, Tupperware, seed corn, 4-H sweatshirts and many gift cards from local restaurants and businesses.



In addition to raising money for local 4-H programs, the day was a time to recognize the achievements of the various Logan County clubs and individuals within those clubs.



Among the guests enjoying the noon time meal was Logan County Fair Queen Caroline Ahrends. In addition to being local royalty, Ahrends is also a 4-H member and was recognized during the award announcements.

With the easing of all Covid restrictions, the ballroom was filled throughout the meal with guests who seemed to as much as anything be enjoying the opportunity to see friends and neighbors and visit freely with guests sharing their table.

2022 4-H Achievement Recognitions

Top County Awards

Eight to 10-year-olds – ALL received “Recognition for submitting 4-H Records” – participation awards.

Eleven to 13-year-olds and 14 & older – Top/outstanding awards (based on achieving a minimum score or better) are given to recognize 4-H member efforts demonstrated within a particular 4-H project area during their 11-13 years. These project areas include Achievement, Animal Science, Community Involvement, Engineering & Technology, Environment/Natural Resources, Food/Nutrition/Health, Home & Family, Personal Development, and Plants & Soils. The award an individual receives is related to his or her main project area and sponsored by Logan County 4-H Supporters.

The criteria include participation at club level and beyond, size/growth of project, variety of projects taken, talks/demos/service with 4-H, knowledge and skills, participation in activities in the 4-H program area and in other 4-H areas. Participation in school and community activities are also considered.

An 11 to 13-year-old 4-H'er may receive the top award only once in each area. After that, the 4-H’er can be selected to receive the blue award from year to year only if minimum score or better is met and the selection committee feels the 4-H’er is worthy of the award again that year.

In the 14 to 19-year age category, the top awards given were sponsored by Logan County 4-H supporters listed in your program. To be considered for these awards, 4-H’ers had to complete and submit the Illinois 4-H Award Application where judging criteria are divided into four sections. Section 1 includes project/program size/growth, Section 2 includes participation in other community & school activities. The third section considers participation in 4-H Events/Activities and the last section consists of an essay written by 4-H’er on their mastery in an award area. The 4-H members in 14 to 19 years of age can repeat from year to year as a Top Award winner.

Recognition for members who completed 4-H records

The 4-H’ers are recognized for completing their 4-H records. The criteria was based on records being completed, overall neatness, being active in the 4-H club, beginning to attend county held activities, and participating in school activities.

John Fulton 2021 Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame Inductee

John Fulton’s remarkable 36-year career with Extension began as an agriculture advisor and then onto a County Director serving Logan, Menard, and Sangamon Counties. John served on multiple regional, state, and national committees and was an active member multiple professional association. Fulton said that in all his years with Extension, the highlight of his work has been the people he’s met along the way.

John is a proud father of three grown children, who went through the 4-H program and attribute their success to the knowledge gained in 4-H. He is also the grandfather of four grandchildren and the husband of Sherry Fulton.

John Fulton is a proud supporter of the 4-H program in Logan, Menard and Sangamon Counties and 4-H appreciates his dedication over the years and for the years to come!
