St. Thomas More ends Hilltoppers season

[May 25, 2022]    The Mount Pulaski Hilltoppers lost in the Class 1A Regional Championship to St. Thomas More Monday night by a final score of 7-5. 

 

St. Thomas More scored twice in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead but the Hilltoppers would plate four runs in the bottom of the second inning and jump in front 4-2.

 

With two runners aboard, Lucas Kuhlman laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored Clay Aylesworth with the first run for Mount Pulaski. Gavin Smith’s RBI double tied the game 2-2. Evan Cooper’s single to center put the Hilltoppers up 3-2. Landon Smith added an RBI single to make the score 4-2.

 

St. Thomas More plated three runs in the top of the third inning and led 5-4.

 

Chance Payne’s RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning tied the game 5-5. Landon Smith was thrown out at home trying to score the go-ahead run.

 

St. Thomas More added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. And RBI triple plated one run. A sacrifice bunt plated the other run. 

 

The Hilltoppers only managed to get one base runner in the final two innings.

 

St. Thomas More goes on to win the Class 1A Regional Championship by a final score of 7-5.

 

Gavin Smith took the loss for Mount Pulaski. He pitched four innings in relief and allowed two runs on two hits. He struck out five batters and walked three.

 

Evan Cooper started the game for the Hilltoppers. Cooper allowed five runs on five hits. He struck out one batter. 

 

The Hilltoppers had nine hits.

 

Evan Cooper, Landon Smith and Chance Payne each had two hits.

 

Liam Smith, Clay Aylesworth and Gavin Smith each had one hit. 

 

Mount Pulaski ends their season with a 22-6 record.
