The Lincoln Railers earned third place in the 2022 Lincoln/Eaton Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday night with a 51-30 win over Mahomet-Seymour.

Payton Cook was named to the all-tournament team for the Railers. Cook had 10 points and 7 rebounds versus Mahomet-Seymour on Saturday night. Cook averaged 13 points per game and 6 rebounds per game for the tournament.

The Railers shot well against the Bulldogs on Saturday night (49% from the field) and they were on fire in the first half from the 3-point line, sinking 7-of-10 shots from beyond the arc.

Tyler Sasse (22) led the Railers with 14 points versus the Bulldogs

Tyler Sasse came off the bench to lead the Railers with 14 points. Payton Cook added 10 points for Lincoln.

The Bulldogs scored first against Lincoln, but it didn’t take the Railers long to take the lead after buckets in the paint by Payton Cook and Jake Bivin. Camden Nelson checked into the game for Lincoln and he quickly drained a three to give Lincoln a 7-2 advantage. Two more points in the lane by Cook made the score 9-2. After a steal and layup by Ki’on Carson, the Railers were up 11-4. Aidan Gowin sank a three just ahead of the first quarter buzzer to make the score 14-4.

The Railers really got hot from long range as the second quarter got underway. Gowin, Sasse and Nelson all connected from beyond the arc and put Lincoln in the lead 23-6. After a bucket by Cook in the lane and a three from Trey Schilling, Lincoln was cruising with a 28-10 lead. Sasse ended the second quarter scoring with another three and Lincoln was on top 31-14.

The third quarter scoring was sparse for Lincoln. Cook and Drew Hayes each made a free throw and Carson added a two-point field goal, but Lincoln held on to a 35-25 lead.

The fourth quarter started a little slow for the Railers, but once Cook lit up the scoreboard with a nice spin move in the lane and the ‘and one’ on the play, the Railers were about to find a groove. Sasse hit another three around the four minute mark. Carson scored a quick layup after that and finally it was Sasse again with the hot hand, sinking a three. With 2:40 left in the game, Lincoln was on top 46-25. Sasse and Gowin completed the scoring for the Railers with points in the paint and Lincoln walked away with third place and the 51-30 victory over Mahomet-Seymour.

The Railers improved to 3-1 on the season.

The boys have this week off but will return to action on Saturday night in Mattoon. The Varsity game is set for a 7 p.m. tip-off. JV will start at 5:30 p.m.
