As October begins to wind down, LDN is bringing you six pink shirt pictures containing 89 people, including 82 women and seven men. The photos include staff and residents at Castle Manor, the membership of the Lincoln Woman's Club, staff and owners of Sorrento's Pizzeria, staff and residents at Friendship Manor, Staff of the Heartland Community College Lincoln Campus, and staff at The Title Center.

The people included in the photos are of various ages and walks of life.

Now is a good time to tell you that cancer does not discriminate. It does not care how old you are. Though age can factor into the likelihood of cancer, the horrid disease also strikes the young. It doesn't care what your economic status is. It doesn't care if you have reached your retirement, at the height of your career, or somewhere in between. One in eight women will have cancer in their lifetime, and it won't matter where they are in their personal life or their careers. Cancer is not gender-specific, and it may surprise some to learn that men can get breast cancer. Though rare, it does happen.

In summary, cancer doesn't care about you, but you can care about cancer. You can care about taking care of yourself through self-exams and living a healthy lifestyle. The more you do now to prevent the disease, the less likely you will become a statistic on that one-in-eight list.

Monday evening will be the city-wide trick-or-treat night in Lincoln. The hours will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

An hour beforehand, at 4 p.m., the LDN ribbon cutters will lead a ribbon cutting for The Traveling Tap, owned by John Martinek of Lincoln. Martinek has had his refrigerated beverage truck up and running for the last couple of months and generally takes it to specific events such as weddings. After the ribbon cutting, held in Martinek's parents' driveway at 111 Crestwood Drive in the Mayfair Addition, Martinek will be handing out cold cider and Guesthouse Cold Crew Coffee to thirsty trick-or-treaters.

The community is invited to attend the ribbon cutting and stop by while trick or treating in Mayfair for a complimentary cold beverage.
