The Logan County Department of Public Health (LCDPH) invites everyone to recognize National Public Health Week (April 3-9). “There is much to celebrate as public health has played a key role throughout the world in preventing disease, promoting healthy living, and protecting our communities. We are pleased to do our part on the local level,” said Don Cavi, Public Health Administrator at LCDPH.

In the 20th century, some of the greatest achievements of public health include vaccinations, control of infectious diseases, decline in deaths from chronic disease, healthier mothers and babies, safer and healthier foods, fluoridation of drinking water, and recognition of tobacco use as a health hazard. Local health departments continue to address many of these areas through activities which include immunization clinics, disease surveillance, WIC nutrition and healthy infant programs, food establishment, well, and sewage system inspections, emergency preparedness planning, and health education.

Cavi adds, “public health is a broad definition which extends beyond just the health department. Government officials, the medical community, nursing homes, law enforcement, fire protection, EMA, schools, social-service agencies, and community members are among others who assist in carrying out activities that protect the health of our communities. The recent COVID-19 pandemic response was a great example. LCDPH operates at the core of such public health activity and is proud to work with its partners. If public health is going to succeed in improving the quality of life, it takes a community of dedicated people.”

LCDPH is proud to serve its citizens by carrying out its mission to “prevent disease, promote wellness, and protect the health of Logan County.” For more information regarding health department services, you can visit their website at WWW.LCDPH.ORG or contact them at 217-735-2317.
