Lincoln defeats Danville 48-42 in regionals

[February 23, 2023]  The Railers played in the Class 3A Regional tournament on Wednesday night in Champaign and it was Lincoln getting past Danville by a final score of 48-42.

A slow start by Lincoln saw the Vikings take an 8-2 first quarter lead, with Payton Cook scoring the Railers lone basket.

Camden Nelson tied the game 8-8 with his back-to-back threes in the second quarter. Aidan Gowin would put Lincoln on top 11-10 with his three at the 4:20 mark. Drew Hayes and Jake Bivin added baskets to complete the scoring and keep the Railers in front, 17-13 the score at the half.

Lincoln would come out shooting in the third quarter and at the 5:45 mark the Railers had a 24-14 lead. The Railers even had a 16 point lead before the Vikings made a surprising run at them. Danville closed out the quarter on a 10-0 run and the lead was trimmed to 34-28. Cook and Trey Schilling led Lincoln with six points each in the quarter and Bivin added five points. Ki’on Carson’s layup completed the scoring here.

Danville tried their best to take the lead in the fourth quarter, but the Railers were able to hold them off thanks to a great defensive effort and the 10 points poured in by Cook. Cook’s two free throws with 19.5 seconds left sealed the 48-42 win for Lincoln.

Payton Cook led Lincoln with 18 points.

Jake Bivin had a great game at both ends and he tossed in 11 points.

Lincoln improved to 26-5 on the season.

Danville ends the season 9-21.

The Railers will play Mahomet-Seymour for the regional championship on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Champaign Central High School.
