Chief of Police statement on Officer involved shooting incident Thursday, June 1st

 

[June 02, 2023] 

On June 1 ,2023, at approximately 10 p.m., Lincoln Police Officers responded to a home on Rigg Drive to assist a person suffering from a mental health crisis. Upon arrival the officers observed the 31 year old man was armed with a knife. Officers attempted to negotiate with the man but he refused to drop the knife and surrender. The man lunged at one of the officers with the knife, at which point the officers used an electronic control device in an attempt to subdue him. This attempt was ultimately unsuccessful, at which point the man was shot by a Lincoln Police Officer.

After being shot, the man fled from the officers and was stopped by them near the intersection of 21st and North State Streets where Lincoln Police Officers fired upon him again after another attempt to negotiate was unsuccessful. The officers were able to remove the knife from the man's possession at that time. The man is being treated for multiple gunshot wounds at an area hospital.

The Lincoln Police Department and Logan County Sheriff's Department secured the scenes and contacted the Illinois State Police, Division of Criminal Investigations, to conduct the investigation. The officers involved were placed on administrative leave, in accordance with Lincoln Police Department policy, while the investigation is conducted.

The investigation regarding the shooting is still ongoing. Upon completion of the investigation, the Logan County State's Attorney's Office will review the case.
