[August 06, 2024]   Gardeners arrived at the fair again Friday morning with fresh flowers, herbs, and plants for the second day of Floriculture competition.

Friday’s contest added a Junior Division and featured two Challenge Classes in addition to divisions in Potted Plants, Cut Flowers, Arrangements, Herbs, and Herb Arrangements. Potted plant categories varied from outdoor flowering plants such as begonias and geraniums to house plants and ferns. Cut Flowers offered an opportunity to repeat a handful of categories from Tuesday’s Floriculture event or bring new contenders such as cockscomb or collections of pollinators (flowers friendly to bees, butterflies, or hummingbirds). The Junior Division was open to young people age 17 and under with cut flower annuals and perennials as well as two options for arrangements.

Arrangements for Friday’s competition encompassed the theme “Games of the XXXIII Olympiad” with seven design categories to choose from. Friday also featured a wide selection of culinary herbs to be shown without blooms– potentially challenging for growers after the summer solstice when days begin to grow shorter and many herbs want to begin to flower and set seed. The theme for the final division, Herb Arrangements, was “And Across the Pond” with three categories to showcase collections of fresh herbs.

After judging completed on Friday, ribbons and points were totaled from both days of Floriculture competition to determine the Champion Exhibitor of Logan County and the Sweepstakes Award. The Champion Exhibitor is awarded to the Logan County exhibitor with the most blue ribbons in all classes from both shows.

The Sweepstakes Award 2024 is the William Kavelman Memorial Award which goes to the exhibitor with the highest points total of both the Tuesday and Friday show and is presented by Tom Kavelman.
