Lincoln Public Library summer reading program kicks off with Foam Zone

On Thursday, June 6, the Lincoln Public Library kicked off its summer reading program with foam cannon fun on the Carnegie lawn.

Many children were joyfully running through the foam being sprayed out of the cannon. Some were covered from head to toe with foam. A few children even created funny hairdos with the foamy bubbles.

Patrick Gettleman and Angie Carter of United Community Bank provided donuts, water and capri sun for the children. They also handed out bags, crayons, coloring books and piggy banks.

This year’s summer reading program theme is “Read, Renew, Repeat.” Youth Services librarian Donna Cunningham said they often use recycled products for their projects.

There will be programs nearly every day for various age groups starting June 10 and ending July 19.

Mondays from 10-10:30 and 2-2:30 are the stream programs for kindergarten through second graders.

Tuesdays from 10-10:30 and 2-2:30 are the explorers’ programs for third through fifth graders.

Each week, these groups will do a craft project.

On Wednesdays, story time will be offered in the library annex for babies through preschoolers.

Thursdays at 10 a.m., there will be programs for both younger and older children. The program Thursday, June 13 will be a show by Nitro Joe. Nitro Joe’s science-based entertainment has been a popular draw for the children when he has presented his program at the library in the past.

Fridays at 2 p.m. will be teen time for sixth through twelfth graders.

Starting next week, children will be able to turn in book logs to receive reading badges and earn prizes.

Calendars with the summer reading program activities can be picked up in the Library annex youth services department.
