[June 10, 2024]
The
Lincoln Area Music Society Community Band continued its outdoor
concert series on Sunday evening with its second concert of the
summer. The concert’s theme was “The Four Elements: Fire, Water,
Earth, and Air.” The weather was sunny and temperate making a
beautiful evening to enjoy live music in Latham Park.
The band was directed by Julie Donnell, a retired band and choir
director from Washington, IL, who was substituting for her nephew,
Riley McDorman, who was married on Saturday.
The concert opened with “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and then began
music that reflected the evening’s theme with “SeaGate Overture” by
James Swearingen. It continued with “Spirit of the Wind” by Rodney
S. Miller, followed by “Burst of Flame,” a concert march by Richard
Bowles. The next number was “Sky Dance” by Richard Saucedo and the
band closed the first portion of the concert with “Kaboom!” by Vince
Gassi.
Donnell thanked the 2024 band sponsors Begolka Farms,
Lincoln Daily News, Guesthouse Coffee, and Lincoln United Methodist
Church before inviting any business interested in sponsoring the
rest of the summer series to please contact

The band then took a ten-minute intermission, which
afforded the audience and band the opportunity to enjoy delicious
homemade cake with ice cream prepared by the Lincoln Woman’s Club.
The proceeds from the cake and ice cream sales at each band concert
support the Lincoln Woman’s Club charitable works and scholarships.
The band opened the second half of
the concert with Salvador Alan Jacobo’s composition “Incendio!”
which means ‘fire.’ It was followed by the choral prelude “For the
Beauty of the Earth” arranged by Claude T. Smith. The next piece was
the popular concert march “The Thunderer” by John Philip Sousa.
“Aztec Fire” by Jay Bocook and “Smoke on the Water” arranged by
Johnny Vinson completed the night’s theme. The final selection was
“God Bless America/America the Beautiful” arranged by Michael Brown.
The next Lincoln Community Band summer concert at Latham Park is
June 23. There will be no concert on Father’s Day, June 16.
