But
about 17 days ahead of that this year, is another important date
that we would like to encourage everyone to remember. Veterans Day
is this year, and every year November 11th. The day is a time to
recognize and thank veterans for their service.
Often times, during the annual observances round about we will hear
the words “All gave some” and “some gave all.”
Within our country there are two federal holidays that honor
veterans. The first of course is Memorial Day and time to remember
those who “gave all” for their country. It is a day for remembering
those brave soldiers who went into service to their country knowing
they might not come home and didn’t.
Veterans Day on the other hand is the day for “all
gave some.” Looking at that phrase, the word “some” is a gross
understatement of the sacrifice these men and women have made for
their country. Giving “some” means coming home with limbs missing,
coming home with horrific memories that haunt them throughout the
rest of their lives, coming home in the case of some, to a country
that was not nearly as grateful as it should have been.
We walk among men and women who have suffered permanent damage from
the use of that horrible chemical agent orange. We spend time with
those who have physical issues that have been with then since their
time of service. We sit in church beside people who have seen hell
on earth, things so terrible that it tested their faith.
Some of our soldiers came home to a life that was not what they had
hoped for when they were children, thanks primarily to what they
suffered in active duty. These are the men
and women that we remember on Veterans Day, those who gave “some”
gave more than we will ever know or understand.

Last year, Lincoln Daily News began rebuilding its
Friends and Family in the Armed Forces list. We got a pretty good
response in the month of November last year, and have started a
respectable list of men and women in active duty and also those who
have served and are now officially classified as veterans. Within
those lists, some have provided postal addresses and or email
addresses. Click
here for current list
This year, we encourage you to check that list and take a moment to
send out some cards or notes to those who are currently serving our
country, and those who have served and came home. Please show them
that Logan County is grateful for their service past and present,
and that they are in our hearts and prayers each day and every day,
not just on Veterans Day.
We would also encourage you to peruse the list and if you have a
loved one not on the list, please submit their information using the

If the information for your loved one is already there, but needs
updating, please use the same form to provide us with new
information.
Our veterans mean the world to us, but we don’t often take the time
to let them know that. This year, please make plans to make a point
of acknowledging them. When you see them out and about thank them
for their service, and please, make plans to attend your local
Veterans Day Observances.
