Property Crimes Rising
The Lincoln Police Department has been responding to a spike in
property crimes, such as burglary and theft over the past few
months. Numerous arrests for these crimes have been made and the
recovery of stolen property has followed these arrests. We urge the
citizens of Lincoln to report every theft or burglary, even if you
think it won't be solved. It is guaranteed to remain unsolved if it
is never reported.
Those who wish to safeguard their belongings should take appropriate
measures to do so. Burglars often target areas they are familiar
with and are easily accessible. Areas with poor lighting and
security are often taken advantage of. Strong locks on sheds,
garages and enclosed trailers are suggested. Good lighting, such as
bright motion lighting is also a deterrent. Finally, visible camera
systems not only deter criminals but also provide police with
valuable evidence in the event you are victimized.
Fraud Crimes
Although businesses retain the right to choose how they accept
payment, it is strongly suggested to refrain from accepting checks,
especially from people who are not account holders with your
business. If the business chooses to continue accepting checks, take
appropriate measures to ensure the person issuing the check is a
person with the authority to do so. First, inspect the check and
verify that the issuer is on the account by requesting photo
identification. If the name on the check is not the person who
appears on the identification, don't accept it.
