Swimming Route 66 at the Lincoln
Park District Aquatic Center
[August 25, 2025]
Lincoln Park District (LPD) Aquatic Center issued a challenge to its
lap swimmers this summer: swim the length of Route 66 in Logan
County. Totaling 8.5 miles in Logan County, Route 66 inspired the
Swim 66 challenge in anticipation of the 100th birthday celebrations
for the Mother Road in 2026. The stalwart swimmers of the LPD took
on the challenge. LPD Executive Director Becky Strait said, “Lap
swimmers are a dedicated bunch and always out here challenging
themselves. We wanted to give them a challenge to work towards. It
was nice to have several participants.”
Swim 66 was a self-led program with swimmers logging their distances
throughout the summer. Six swimmers officially completed the Swim 66
challenge and earned a custom-designed T-shirt to show-off their
accomplishment. In fact, most of the lap swimmers exceeded the
challenge and swam the distance of Route 66 in Logan County more
than once. The awarded T-shirts were adorned with a Swim 66 logo
designed by current-season lifeguard and next year’s head lifeguard
Mattea McFadden.
