Saturday morning, before we knew that the infamous groundhog would see his shadow on Sunday, we knew that spring was approaching. How? Because the community appeared to come out of its hibernation and flock to Zion Lutheran School for the first BIG fundraiser of the new year.

It is often said by LDN staff that Logan County seems to go into hibernation from Christmas through the month of January but seems to come alive again when it is time for the traditional Zion Lutheran School Pancake & Sausage Breakfast.

The crowds that filled the schools’ gymnasium from early in the morning to just past noon was a testament to the fact.

The breakfast featured stuffed sausages that were made from hogs donated to the breakfast and processed at the Atlanta Locker, and hundreds of pancakes made fresh in the kitchen area adjacent to the gym.

This year, Logan County saw a thaw in the days before the breakfast which meant that parking was limited to paved areas only. To accommodate the hundreds of cars that would come to the school, an annex parking lot was assigned across the street at the north edge of the Farm & Home Supply parking lot. Guests were then bused from the lot to the front door of the school, then later, when finished with their breakfast and other shopping, guests took the bus back to their cars.

In the parking lots at the school, volunteers were keeping a watchful eye on guests who were leaving and made sure that vehicles that came to the school first had a chance to park within walking distance of the school.

Inside, the hum of happy voices was music to the ears of the breakfast organizers. Guests were consuming large plates of food after finding empty spots at tables, where perhaps they met up with old friends, or some just popped down and immediately started making new acquaintances.

The parameter of the gym was filled with silent auction items, and bids were mounting up on nearly every item.

The annual meat sale was also ongoing throughout the morning. All the meat has to be pre-ordered to ensure that there are sufficient amounts to fill the high demand. Many utilize the sale each year to stock up on small packages of high-quality pork products, offered at very reasonable prices.

The annual breakfast supplies the faith-based private school with funding that enables it to serve its student body throughout the year. Support for the breakfast has always been strong, and is always appreciated by the school, its staff and its students.
