The nationally observed Flag Day is this Saturday, June 14th.

Traditionally this is the day that the Lincoln American Legion Post 263 hosts its annual flag retirement ceremony. The event will be held again this year in the rear side yard of the Legion Post building at 1740 Fifth Street at 10 a.m.

Earlier this week, American Legion Post 263 commander Gene Hickey, and his trusty side kick Maverick, were out collecting American Legion flags that had been placed over Memorial Day weekend. Hickey said that he and Maverick collected approximately 4,000 flags. Each flag will be inspected to see if it is fit for service for another year. If it is, it will be stored away. If it is not, then it will be added to the collection of flags that will be retired this coming Saturday at the Legion Post.

The community is invited to attend this reverent retirement of worn and tattered flags through the proper disposal method of burning. If anyone has an old flag they would like to bring to the event for disposal, they are encouraged to do so.
