American Legion Post #263 holds
flag disposal ceremony
[June 17, 2025]
Saturday, June 14, an
unserviceable flags ceremony was held at American Legion post 263 in
Lincoln to dispose of flags that no longer serve their purpose.

The ceremony began with the color
guard presenting several flags. Acting vice commander Ken Werth
blessed and inspected flags deemed unserviceable. Because the flags
had served their purpose, they were to be retired from service and
destroyed in an appropriate and respectful manner.
A prayer was then offered thanking the Lord for the country, its
flag and the liberty for which the flag stands.

Next, the color guard and everyone
in attendance walked over to where a fire pit was set up. After the
fire was lit, the flags were placed in the fire one at a time.

Once veterans had placed flags in
the fire, everyone else was invited to participate in putting flags
in the fire. Some did it in memory of family members who had served.

Anyone who has flags that are
tattered, torn, faded or damaged can place them in the disposal box
in front of the American Legion building.
