Lincoln Area Music Society Community Band Performs "My Heart Will Go On"

[June 25, 2025]  The Lincoln Area Music Society (LAMS) Community Band performed its third concert of the season on Sunday evening, June 22. The concert was moved to First United Methodist Church from Latham Park due a heat advisory. The band was directed by guest conductor Juile Donnell, and the concert was emceed by Terry McDorman. Although the heat prevented the usual outdoor concert experience, the acoustics of the church sanctuary produced a lovely blend of instruments during the performance.

The concert opened with the band’s traditional performance of the “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and then began music that reflected the evening’s theme McDorman described as “covering the full gamut of human emotions.” The first song was a rousing version of “Hooked on a Feeling,” a pop song written by Mark James in 1968. This was followed by “The Sound and the Fury” by Robert Smith inspired by William Faulkner’s novel of the same title. The third selection was a creative rendition of Anna Bartlett Warner's classic children’s hymn set to William B. Bradbury’s melody, "Jesus Loves Me.” The music continued with Freddie Mercury’s "Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” originally performed by Queen.

The band then took a brief intermission at the conclusion of the first half. Due to the change of venue, the Lincoln Woman’s Club unfortunately was unable to provide the homemade cakes as are available to enjoy during concerts at Latham Park. Sponsors of the LAMS summer concert series are ME Realty, Culver’s, Eaton Corporation, Lincoln Daily News, and Begolka Farms.

The band opened the second half of the concert with "You Make Me So Very Happy," written by Harry Hill of Mt. Pulaski and originally performed by Blood, Sweat, and Tears. This number was followed by Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper” from 1976. The next piece was “My Heart Will Go On,” the Grammy award-winning theme from “Titanic” composed by James Horner with lyrics by Will Jennings and recorded by Celine Dion. The next-to-last piece was “Choose Joy” by Randall Standrich with nods to Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” The concert concluded with the traditional “God Bless America” in which the audience was invited to stand and participate.

LAMS is comprised of volunteers, and community musicians are warmly invited to join the LAMS Community Band for the summer season, and LAMS Chorale and Orchestra for fall and spring seasons.
