Sacred Heart-Griffin defeats Mount
Pulaski
[September 04, 2025]
Mount Pulaski hosted SHG on Wednesday night and the
Hilltoppers have nothing to hang their heads about after coming up
short against the Cyclones.
In the Varsity matchup, SHG won the first set 25-16 and the
Hilltoppers were on the edge of winning set two, but ended up
falling 27-25 to the Cyclones.
Not once, but twice in set two the Hilltoppers had a 15-10 lead over
SHG.
With Mount Pulaski on top 15-10 the first time in set two, there was
a long delay in the game as the referees consulted with each other
at the scorer’s table. It seems that the refs determined a Mount
Pulaski player was not the correct server, after initially checking
the lineup and not seeing a problem. But once five points were on
the board, the refs concurred and took away five points from Mount
Pulaski.
The SHG crowd was overjoyed at the 10-10 score that was reset.

The Hilltoppers proceeded to get down to business and play ball
until another 15-10 score was reached. SHG was more than a bit
surprised and after kills by Elayna Marten and Ella Martin, the
Hilltoppers stayed in front 18-13.
Mount Pulaski kept their focus and eventually led 20-15 before the
Cyclones earned a couple points. After a tip by Addison Brown for a
point, she followed that up with an ace and Mount Pulaski was
looking good with a 22-17 lead.
Mount Pulaski was ready to put the nail in the coffin with a 24-20
lead but SHG’s senior superstar, Kendall Stotlar, who is seriously
fantastic, had other plans.

Stotlar put down a kill that turned the tide in the Cyclones favor.
The Cyclones next point came from a ball that dropped deep in Mount
Pulaski’s corner. After a hitting error by the Hilltoppers resulted
in another point, Mount Pulaski was called for a lift next and the
Cyclones were celebrating a 24-24 tie.
SHG gave Mount Pulaski the 25-24 lead on a serve out of bounds.
Junior McKenzie Payton then put a kill down the line to tie the set
again, 25-25 the score.
Mount Pulaski then gave the Cyclones a point on what was simply put
just a bad set. Game point went to SHG courtesy of a kill by middle
hitter Kate Cummins, also a junior.
Addison Brown led Mount Pulaski with 4 kills and Elayna Marten added
3 kills and 8 digs.
Alyson Murphy had 11 assists and 8 digs.
Olivia Smith had two aces.
SHG won the JV contest 25-12 and 25-22.
There is so much potential in this Mount Pulaski team and the girls
look to get back in the win column tonight as they host Athens for a
JV match at 6:00 p.m. and a Varsity match at 7 p.m.
