Hartsburg-Emden takes down Williamsville

[September 05, 2025]  The Hartsburg-Emden volleyball team traveled to Williamsville for some Thursday night action on the court and it was the Stags leaving town with two victories.

The Varsity won the three-set thriller by scores of 26-24, 10-25 and 25-23.

Cambelle Hopkins led the Varsity with 11 kills.

The JV won 25-23 and 25-15.

The same Cambelle Hopkins led the JV with 5 kills.

The Stags Varsity gave the Bullets their first loss of the season and Coach Jennifer Hayes was understandably on cloud nine after the win. After all, the Stags enrollment is 53 students and Williamsville boasts an enrollment nearly ten times that, with around 500 students.

“We came into the gym feeling pretty good,” said Hayes, after the win. “And we started the match with the same feel. We got up 18-12 and let up. You could feel the momentum shift. We played well enough to finish set one, but set two was all Williamsville. We needed to reset for set three. We got a little behind but you could see us start to dig in. Our passing was a little crisper and we dug a few more balls. We even saved a few and just went at it harder. Then we got behind and I had a “motivational timeout.” Then things just changed. A switch went on. We went after each play like we should. We hit the ball hard and we got our hands on blocks, the little details we’ve been working on. The mental part of the game. First win like that in two years. It was well earned!”

Just a quick recap from last year’s Stags-Bullets matchup that ended at 8:43 p.m. in the Hartsburg gymnasium:

The Bullets took set one 26-24. The Stags earned the win in set two by a score of 25-23. And finally in set three it was the Bullets on top 26-24 again. It was an exhilarating night of volleyball then and also now. Only this year it was the Stags getting the win on the Bullets home court.

The 2025 win over the Bullets improves the Stags record to 6-2 on the season.

The Bullets are 4-1 on the season.

The Stags JV team has a 2-1 record.

The Stags will host Lewistown on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

The JV game will start at 6:00 p.m. Varsity will follow at 7:00 p.m.
