Logan County Animal Rescue works to provide shelter and comfort to animals waiting for their forever home

[September 10, 2025]  Many people in the community happily give space in their heart to support, and adopt, shelter pets. The most well known shelter in the area is of course the Human Society of Logan County. The Humane Society does amazing work and should be celebrated, however, there is another way to help animals who are in desperate need in Lincoln and Logan County.

Enter Logan County Animal Rescue. LCAR is an all volunteer pet rescue organization which emphasizes pet adoption and animal care. They are a 501c3 not-for-profit organization.

LCAR works heavily with Logan County Animal Control. They help to provide shots and veterinary services to animals as well as transport animals to no-kill shelters throughout Illinois. Since 2009 LCAR has saved over 3,500 animals.

Each year LCAR does a "Christmas Campaign" to raise funds for larger purchases or specific goals. In 2023 they were able to purchase a five foot tall, stainless-steel cage unit with four sections available for housing. Each section is large enough to hold two large cats, a mama and her kittens or even a small dog.

The 2024 campaign allowed for LCAR to install coverings over the outdoor kennels at Logan County Animal Control this past July. The timing could not have been better as the covers were installed just before a severe heat wave.

Working with Animal Control and C. R. Coffmann of Master Builders of Lincoln, LCAR was able to turn the support of Logan County donors into shade and shelter for many animals that needed it.

Not only are the dogs protected from the sun but also rain, snow and other elements. In addition, there have been trees planted to provide even more shade during the "dog days" of summer.

This year LCAR plans to focus their Christmas Campaign on raising funds to provide spay and neuter services to as many animals as possible throughout 2026. Without this service animals can not be adopted.

If you are interested in donating to LCAR you can visit their Facebook or website for more information.

It should also be mentioned that LCAR helps promote the animals that are up for adoption at Logan County Animal Control. They post pictures and information on web outlets and, from time to time, pay adoption fees.

Logan County Animal Control does have cats and dogs looking for a forever home and they will be happy to start the application process with you. You should always call first as they might be out on a service call somewhere in the county.

Animal Control is located at 1517 N. Kickapoo Street in Lincoln. They are open Mon. - Fri. form 10:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. You can reach them at (217) 735-3232. They also have a Facebook page where you can view some of the animals up for adoption. However, if you see Forest you should know he came home with me the day after I took the pictures for this article.

Support LCAR and all of the local animal shelters. If you can, please open your home to an animal that needs it. It can change your life.
