Hilltoppers get past Delavan 7-1
[April 10, 2026]
It’s been a couple seasons since Mount Pulaski beat Delavan
on the baseball field so Thursday night Coach Troy Burgard and the
boys were in a really good mood following the team’s 7-1 victory
over the Panthers.
Coach Burgard was especially happy about the performance on the
mound from his senior, Preston Cowan.
Cowan only had a couple innings of Varsity experience under his belt
when he took the mound versus Delavan. He ended up tossing a
complete game, allowing three hits and one run. He walked three and
struck out six. He was dominant and in control from start to finish.
Cowan was also 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.
Caden Wyler, who just returned to the lineup on Tuesday afternoon
after missing a couple seasons with injuries, was also 2-for-4 with
two RBIs and a run scored. Wyler took care of the defensive duties
at first base and made a catch in foul territory to end the game.
Keoni Charron had a multi-hit game as well, going 2-for-3 with an
RBI and a walk.
Luke Martin, Tyler Cross and Jaeden Jackson also had hits for Mount
Pulaski.

Luke Martin got the hit parade going for the Hilltoppers in the
first inning with a two-out double to left. Tyler Cross followed
with an RBI single. Jaeden Jackson and Carter Clark worked the
Panthers pitcher for walks. Caden Wyler was clutch with the
bases-loaded single that drove in two runs. Mount Pulaski closed the
inning with a 3-0 lead.
Preston Cowan had a bunt single in the second inning and with Chase
Roberts and Tyler Cross aboard with walks, Jaeden Jackson was able
to drive in a run on a sacrifice fly. The lead reached 4-0.
Wyler led off the bottom of the third inning with a double to center
and Charron came up next to hit a single to right. Roberts lifted a
sacrifice fly to right that scored Wyler and the lead grew to 5-0.

In the bottom of the fifth a walk to Roberts and a
double by Cowan put another run on the board for the Hilltoppers.
Delavan was successful in plating a run in the top
of the sixth inning.
Charron added an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning that
scored Wesley Bobell.
Delavan put two runners on base in the top of the seventh inning but
Cowan still managed to get out of the inning with 20 pitches thrown.
The 7-1 Tomahawk Conference victory belonged to the Hilltoppers and
it was definitely an outstanding effort for Preston Cowan’s first
Varsity win.
Hudson Briggs was the losing pitcher for Delavan.
Mount Pulaski improves to 5-2 on the season.
The Hilltoppers will play two games today in Pleasant Plains.
The first game will be played at 2:00 p.m. versus Father McGivney.
The second game will be under the lights at 8:00 p.m. versus
Pleasant Plains.
Injury report:
The Hilltoppers were dealt a devastating blow this week when junior
Aaron Volle suffered a 5th metatarsal fracture in his foot. Volle is
a key part of the offense and he roams centerfield like Jim Edmonds.
There is hope for Volle’s return by the postseason.
