Martin pitches masterpiece in 2-1 win over Clinton

[April 16, 2026]  Luke Martin pitched a masterpiece on Wednesday afternoon versus the Clinton Maroons as the Hilltoppers were on the winning end of a 2-1 battle.

“Luke was dialed in all night and flirted with a no-hitter,” said Mount Pulaski head coach Troy Burgard.

Martin also struck out ten batters and walked just one while tossing seven innings.

Martin didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning, when he gave up back-to-back doubles to Jack Manning and Josh Bass, and the Maroons tied the game 1-1.

Mount Pulaski took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning after two consecutive walks and a ground out by Jaeden Jackson that scored Preston Cowan.

With the game on the line in the bottom of the sixth inning, Cowan led off with a single and Martin doubled to left. Cowan had to stop at third on Martin’s hit. Soon after, Cowan would be out at home trying to steal. Martin was able to advance to third on the throw. With two outs and Carter Clark in the batter’s box, Martin was able to score the winning run on the pitcher’s error.

Martin cruised through the seventh inning, retiring the side on a pop out and two strikeouts.

Mount Pulaski had four hits versus Clinton starter Brock Wilson.

Wilson worked six innings, striking out ten Hilltoppers and walking three. Only one of the runs he gave up was earned.

Luke Martin and Tucker Fitzpatrick each doubled for Mount Pulaski and Preston Cowan had two singles and two stolen bases.

Each team committed one error.

Mount Pulaski is now 7-4.

The Hilltoppers host Midwest Central Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
