Stags place second in 51st Quincy
Invitational
Cambelle Hopkins and the Eeten sisters make
all-tournament team
[October 12, 2026]
For over 30 years the Hartsburg-Emden Stags have been
traveling to Quincy, Ill. for the Quincy Invitational. Coach
Jennifer Hayes has guided those teams for all these years and each
and every year the little team from Logan County ends up making the
biggest noise.
Saturday, October 10, 2026 was no exception as the 2026 Stags
finished in second place in the tournament.
The Stags had a great day against some pretty big competition.
In pool play on Saturday morning, the Stags beat Alton 25-14 and
25-15.
Next the Stags fell to Quincy High 10-25 and 18-25.
The Stags then defeated Camp Point Central 25-13 and 25-8.
The Stags advanced to play the no. 1 team from the other pool,
Hannibal, and took them down 21-25, 28-26 and 15-12.
That win pushed the Stags into the championship match against Quincy
High.
The Blue Devils defeated the Stags 25-14 and 25-14 in their second
matchup of the day, taking the tournament championship.
Coach Hayes always looks forward to taking her team to Quincy and
seeing different competition.
“For the 32nd year in a row, I took my team to the Quincy High
School Invite,” said Coach Hayes. “We look forward to this one
because we see a lot of teams we don’t see locally. It also is the
perfect weekend. We go out to supper and the Haunted House for team
bonding. Then on Saturday we have five matches. It’s a brutal day.
We are by far the smallest school, so we love the challenge. And I
love the faces of the teams we play when we tell them we have 43
students in our high school. They start cheering for us in the
stands.”
“We played great volleyball this weekend,” added Hayes. “We have
reworked our lineup and it’s getting better and better. We lost to a
very talented Quincy High. They are a little bigger than us. Then we
won a great three-match thriller against Hannibal, Missouri, in the
semifinals to get a chance to play Quincy High again for the
championship. Again, we played a great match against a great team.
It was a great day of volleyball.”
Congratulations to Cambelle Hopkins and Emma and Ava Eeten for
making the all-tournament team.
The Stags improved their season record to 18-8.
The Stags will play Springfield Lutheran on Tuesday, October 13,
2026. That game will be played at Our Saviors Lutheran Grade School
in Springfield.
