Stags take second in St. Thomas
More tournament
[October 19, 2026]
The Hartsburg-Emden Stags played a full day of volleyball on
Saturday, October 17, 2026 at the St. Thomas More Morgan Lee
Buerkett Memorial Tournament in Champaign and the team ended the day
with a second place finish.
The Stags had a great weekend, going 3-2 versus some fantastic
competition.
The Stags beat Trinity 25-18 and 25-21 to start the early morning
action on Saturday.
The Stags followed that match up with a close loss to state-ranked
Athens 21-25, 25-23 and 9-15.
The Stags were back in the win column with a 18-25, 25-20 and 15-5
three-set win over Teutopolis.
The semifinal match was exciting as the Stags beat Mahomet-Seymour
25-21 and 27-26.
A 27-point cap was in place here.
In the championship match the Stags fell to no. 3 state-ranked
Galena, 21-25 and 16-25.
“They are the real deal,” said coach Jennifer Hayes, referring to
Galena. “My team was up 20-14. And then we kind of let it slip away
but we were right there.”
“Mahomet Seymour was probably the best match we’ve played so far,”
continued Hayes. “And the Athens defense is just incredible. The
best I’ve seen is a long, long time. We played them on September
15th and got our world rocked 14-25 and 13-25. So we knew we had
some work to do when we saw they were in our pool. We lost a close
first set 21-25, then carried that confidence into set two winning
25-22. In the third set, we got off to a slow start and dug a hole
we just could not dig out of, losing 9-15.”
“But then we really took off playing great team ball and we defeated
Mahomet Seymour, which came out no. 1 from their side of the
tournament. They didn’t plan to lose. We shocked them with a 25-21
and 27-26 semifinal victory.”
Shocking teams has been a theme as of late for the Stags, who
improved to 23-10 on the season with two regular season games
remaining this week.
The Stags will host Greenview Monday, October 19, 2026 at 6:00 p.m.
A BBQ dinner will be served featuring Fat Boy’s pulled pork, baked
beans, coleslaw and a homemade chocolate chip cookie.
On Thursday, October 21, 2026 the Stags host Mattoon for Senior
Night. The JV game will start at 5:00 p.m. The Varsity will follow.
