Reading the night away

[APRIL 1, 2000]  For the second year in a row, kindergarten through fourth grade students at Chester East Lincoln are becoming closer to their family.  The second annual Reading Razzmatazz, coordinated by a teacher’s committee at CEL, was a huge success. Nearly 60 families attended last night’s event.

These youngsters were encouraged to bring their favorite books with them—to snuggle up and read not only to their parents but with their family.  Parents believe that this is a unique occasion to spend with their children. Laura Irwin, whose son Clayton is a student at CEL said, “this is a great idea.”  The Irwins, who also have a three-year-old daughter, were thankful that this gave them the opportunity to spend special time alone with Clayton.

Other parents agree. Jay Berglin who was attending last nights even with his daughter Emily, stated that the event is successful because you can simply relax.  Another benefit he stated was that there was “no TV.”

In addition to family reading, there were special guest readers.  Fred Plese, Superintendent at Lincoln Community High School read “Buz” by Richard Egielski, while his wife, Diana read a childhood favorite, “Three Little Chipmunks.”  Members of the CEL school board, local police officer Chuck Gunning, Dr. Carol, Dr. Hauter, CEL teachers, and various high students read their favorite selections to the families as well.

The night’s activities also included a delicious pizza break, and everyone enjoyed an entertainment break by speech team members Doug Rohrer and Erica Brickey. Tim Searby also entertained students and their families with an energetic sing along.

Reading was rewarded too.  Emily Berglin was energetic when she revealed that the best thing about family reading night was “the prizes—and getting to read books.”  Book related door prizes were given out at the end of the night.
